Annual Benefit Galas

Background

At Solano College, Mr. Johnston planned galas that highlighted a specific college program each year, such as Biotech, Automotive Technology, Performing Arts or Literary Arts. Attendance was typically higher when one program was highlighted, and a specific audience was targeted. As the event evolved, it was often located at the college Performing Arts Center with a cocktail style buffet dinner and non-assigned seating except for sponsors. This approach allowed for socializing, followed by a short theater program to recognize award recipients. A new class of SCC Distinguished Alumni was recognized each year with those selected often from the program being celebrated.

Use Benefit Galas to Acknowledge Compelling Achievements

Benefit galas that recognize meaningful achievements and awards with a compelling backstory often achieve success. This creates an authenticity to the celebration that drives attendance and donations.  Consider a prominent keynote speaker but keep the program short while giving people a reason the stay longer with live entertainment and dancing. It is easy to underestimate the time and effort needed to recruit auction gifts that generate bidding wars, but the financial success of the event is dependance on this. Be sure to use a mobile phone app for silent auctions.
